The University of Toronto is committed to equity, diversity and excellence, and the Division of the Vice-President, Research and Innovation (VPRI), shares this dedication to building a culture of inclusive excellence. We recognize that the creation of a more equitable, diverse and inclusive research environment is not only a moral imperative—it is necessary to attract and retain a broad cohort of the best and brightest researchers, and to create a climate in which all researchers achieve their full potential. Equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI) are resources for excellence: research is stronger when everyone is welcome in our classrooms, in our labs, in our fieldwork and in our research partnerships.
VPRI will serve as a champion and leader in EDI in research and innovation. We are committed to supporting the excellence of all our researchers and will work intentionally to build a more inclusive research and innovation ecosystem across the tri-campus community. We know that we can’t treat EDI as a separate or stand-alone issue; instead, we seek to embed EDI principles throughout our activities. In particular, we will continue to develop and implement policies and practices that promote EDI; act on the remaining recommendations of the Working Group on Equity and Diversity in Research and Innovation; share and promote practices that support EDI; ensure that the University and our researchers exceed external research sponsor requirements related to EDI; and work collaboratively with other divisions to align our strategies with broader EDI initiatives at the University of Toronto.
We also recognize that we are accountable in fulfilling this commitment to EDI. We look forward to sharing our progress toward meeting these goals on this website, in our VPRI Annual Reports and through our engagement with the University community.
